Subscriber Benefits

I know, I know, I'm breaking the rules: I'm supposed to talk about one topic only, dance around and point at words on Tik Tok, and convince you I'm the expert you can't possibly do without.

Yuck.

I've never much liked rules. I think I'll just try to be myself. (What does that mean? Always changing, but here's a little bit about me.)

Newsletters for Free Subscribers

If you're new here, grab a free subscription to get a feel for things. If I someday earn your paid subscription or you decide to thank me with a cup of coffee, rad. For today, here's what to expect from your free subscription.

Tao Tuesday

Every week, I'll send you a new part of The Apostate's Tao Te Ching.  Like the original Tao, you can expect short, thought-provoking poems – but I've done my best to nudge Lao Tzu's timeless ideas toward principles that will help you outgrow a religious tradition on purpose. Maybe an example will help?

Apostate’s Tao Te Ching: Let Go of Knowing
Do you miss the confidence of knowing? Are you willing to live within shadow?Embrace the unknowableand you will find your way.

Fast Friday

The first Friday of each month, you'll get an easy-to-skim newsletter with links to the most interesting things I bump into. Expect links to great music, books, podcast episodes, and original essays – along with tweet-length commentary to pique your curiosity. It will look something like this:

Free Subscriber Example: First Friday of Fall

I admit I'm surprised and delighted every time my writing resonates well enough to earn a paid subscriber. Thank you! Here's how I try to earn permission to keep writing for you:

Expanded Tao Tuesday

Free subscribers get the first part of each chapter of The Apostate's Tao Te Ching, but paying subscribers will receive a whole chapter. That typically means twice the content: my reimagined version of Lao Tzu's original wisdom, plus a second poetic attempt to honor the challenge, right now, of becoming the person you have been all along.

Premium Bonus: If you're really feeling it, opt for a premium subscription. For a dime more a day, each Tuesday will bring a recording of my voice reading that week's chapter.

This example shows the difference between free and paid subscriptions.

Every Friday Is Fast Friday!

The same format you're used to from your free subscription, but more of it. I'll send you a Fast Friday newsletter every week with easy-to-skim summaries of the ideas that have been distracting me most. Expect links to great music, books, podcast episodes, and essays – along with tweet-length summaries to pique your curiosity.

The Scariest Paid Perks

This leaves me feeling especially vulnerable, but my therapist swears it's good for me: Paid subscribers get access to behind-the-scenes content and two-way conversations. You can ask questions, challenge my assumptions, even connect with other subscribers. I'll share drafts, abandoned ideas, and original essays that dive deeper into the process of outgrowing who we used to be to become more of who we have always been. (Oooh that's a deep one.)
